NSF Survey Report

Overview

Select U-M departments are required to complete the "Survey of Graduate Students & Postdoctorals in Science & Engineering" every year for the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institute of Health (NIH). Separate instructions from this document are sent to departments that complete the survey each year by the NSF Survey Coordinator in Rackham, which include details for completing the actual survey on the NSF website.

The UM NSF Survey report in M-Pathways is designed to make the NSF survey process as easy as possible, but it may also be used for other reporting purposes:

  • Use of UM NSF Survey for NSF Survey Departments
    • The UM NSF Survey report generates PDF reports providing summary grids of the data required to complete the actual NSF survey, as well as lists of detailed student information for validating the counts in the summary grids.
    • Departments with joint programs need to coordinate which department accounts for students with multiple degrees in the actual survey. This is because these students are included in both departments' UM NSF Survey report based on the students' Academic Program code.
  • Using NSF Survey for Other Reporting Purposes
    • The UM NSF Survey report captures a variety of student data that departments may use to meet other reporting needs.
    • In addition to the PDF reports summarizing the NSF survey data, CSV (comma separated value) files are generated which capture some individual categories of data. If applicable, the CSV files can be exported into Microsoft Excel so departments can reformat the data.
